Part-time is realistic to start, including alongside advisory or practice work. Pay is discussed individually. This is a role with authority — if you say a figure is wrong, it gets fixed before anything ships.
What you’ll own.
Own the VAT and OSS model — destination rates, thresholds, reverse charge, and what happens outside the EU
Keep invoicing compliant as Article 226 and national rules move, including e-invoicing mandates
Cover the platform side — how Shopify and the payment processors report fees, payouts and tax, and where their figures disagree
Review what the product tells customers before it says it, and write the plain-English version of every rule
Watch cross-border obligations: registrations, IOSS, customs where it touches the numbers
Be the answer when a customer’s accountant asks how a figure was reached
The person
What we’re looking for.
Real EU VAT experience — in practice, in-house or at a tax authority
You can read a directive and say what it means for a line of code, not just for a memo
Fluent English
You are comfortable saying “this is estimated, not measured” and insisting the product says so too
Precision without theatre — the goal is a number an accountant accepts
Bonus: marketplace tax experience, or e-invoicing rollouts in more than one member state
